The Best Way to Shop for Rare, Vintage Trumpets

Trumpet players are well aware that eBay is an excellent place to shop for Trumpets. Yet, there is a better way that makes it easy and fun for trumpet players to find the rare, vintage horn of their dreams.

Martin Committee TrumpetVintage Trumpets have quite an appeal for trumpet players and collectors. There is good reason for that. Some of the best playing horns date back to the early 1950’s, 40’s, 30’s, 20’s and early 1900’s. Popular names and highly sought after brands like Conn New Wonder, Conn Connstellation, Olds Recording, Super Recording, Martin Committee, Martin Handcraft and H.N White just to name a few, are still some of the best playing, best sounding and well-made trumpets there are – that is, if you’re lucky enough to get your hands on any of them. Beyond their sound and quality, these horns are greatly appreciated for their nostalgic and historical appeal as they were played by many of the great virtuosos of the past. So, where do you find these excellent-sounding, historical trumpets?

Shopping at rummage sales is not the easiest way to find rare and highly appealing trumpets, but through a consistent, regular effort, this method still probably offers you the best chance of finding a rare diamond in the rough that is below street price. Let’s get real, if it were easy to find rare trumpets below market price, we could all afford the horn of our dreams . Unfortunately, finding those rare deals on unique, valuable and vintage trumpets is about as difficult as mastering the Carnival of Venice in all of its variations. On the other hand, nothing ventured means nothing gained. It’s worth stopping by a few garage sales once or twice a month. Also, don’t forget to check the estate sales!

Another possible way to find rare and valuable trumpets is through your local pawn shops. Call ahead and ask them if they have any trumpets for sale. They will be glad to give you the full details and their selling price for their horn over the phone. Don’t expect to get an amazing deal from a Pawn Shop, however. These shops know all about eBay and realize that sometimes a valuable antique may fall into their hands. They are prepared to sell it for the full eBay market price, but you are certainly welcome to bicker and negotiate the price. Chances are, you know more about the trumpet then do they, so be prepared to leverage your knowledge and buzz words for a better price. Now, that we’ve hinted eBay is the #1 target for vintage horn shopping, have you heard of Trumpet Search?
Trumpet Search is like an eBay Auction site on steroids. It is the quintessential way to shop for eBay deals on trumpets without having to type in a bunch of search phrases to find the horn you want. Trumpet Search was designed by a trumpet player and horn collector. Horns are not only sorted by type and brand, but by age as well. You can shop for valuable, antique horns by any decade: 1900s, 1910s, 1920s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, etc. Horns are also sorted by Brand, Model and Make, so you’re spending more time research the exact trumpet you want, rather than hunting all over the place for them.
